Game of Logging Level 1 focuses on introducing the participant to open face felling and the development of techniques to safely use it.  Topics covered include personal protective equipment, chainsaw safety features, chainsaw reactive forces, bore cutting, pre-planning the fell, and understanding hinge wood strength.

USDA Announces START2FARM.GOV to Support America’s Future Farming Generations
WASHINGTON, Feb. 16, 2012 – Today, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and USDA’s National Agricultural Library, in partnership with the American Farm Bureau Federation, announced Start2farm.gov, a new online portal that helps provide assistance for beginning farmers and ranchers. The portal includes links to training, financing, technical assistance and other support services specifically for beginning farmers and ranchers as well as successful case studies about new and beginning farmers and ranchers.

Activities for youth offered during winter break!

Participants are welcome to bring a bag lunch to eat between morning and afternoon classes if attending both sessions.

All programs are being held at the Extension Learning Farm, 2043 State Rt. 68. Pre-registration is required for all classes by Friday, Feb. 17 by calling 379-9192.

• Outdoor Survival: 10 a.m.-noon, Tuesday, Feb. 21. Join Zach Ducharme, 4-H Camp Overlook Program Director, for this informative and hands-on outdoor survival experience. Participants will discuss the body’s basic needs in times of survival and learn how to prepare for a night spent in the woods. A significant portion of the class involves a practical application, so come prepared to be outdoors in any weather. Boots, winter coat and pants, gloves and hats are a must. $5 class fee.

• Food, Fitness and Fun: 1-3 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 21. Join the After School educators, Amanda & Rebecca and Nutrition Educator Jackie Gates in an afternoon of games and making healthy snacks. All activities will be hands-on; activities will be held indoors & outdoor, weather permitting. Fee is $5.

• Introduction to Maple Sugaring: 10 a.m.-noon, Wednesday Feb. 22. If you are interested in an introduction to the maple sugaring process and how to get started on a backyard scale, then this class is right for you. Work with Hugh Newton, local maple operator, and Charlie Hitchman, Extension Learning Farm Manager, to explore the possibilities. Learn about the sugaring industry, its history, and steps you can take to get involved. $5 class fee.

• Crocheting 101: 1-3 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 22. Join us for this great introduction to crocheting with area artist and Gouverneur resident, Paula Towne. Participants will learn the “basics” while creating a crocheted chair pad from recycled fabric materials. Those students interested may continue with more challenging projects in future classes. All materials included, $15 class fee.

• Birds in Your Yard: 10 a.m.-noon, Thursday, Feb. 23. 4-H Educators Amy Sands & Mary Beth Green will discuss tips on bird identification, how to attract certain birds, what certain birds like to eat, bird housing and other helpful tips on birding. Participants will also construct a birdhouse to take home. Fee is $15.

• Public Presentations Clinic: 10 a.m.-noon, Friday, Feb. 24. Judy Boyer leader of the Raindrop Roundup 4-H Club and public presentation instructor will lead a Public Presentation Clinic to help 4-H’ers ready their presentations, give tips on picking topics, and how to put everything together, for the upcoming contest. Some members of Judy’s club will do sample presentations. Anyone interested in practicing their presentation in front of Judy may do so, indicate that when pre-registering. There is no fee for this class.

• Getting Started in a 4-H Livestock Project: 1-3 p.m., Friday, Feb. 24. Interested and experienced 4-H’ers are encouraged to join Extension Educators and 4-H volunteers for this session on 4-H livestock projects. Livestock discussion will include beef, sheep and swine. This class is appropriate for families or youth interested in getting started and more experienced youth showman who can offer their experience and interests. Interested students will be encouraged to participate in St. Lawrence County judging team. No class fee.
